NYC Marathon 2009 - Media Center

ING New York City Marathon as viewed from the race media center on the 36th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel at Columbus Circle, less than a half mile from the race finish. That is, until I had to sprint to catch my flight back to San Diego!

  • Central Park South on the right, the last mile of the race before the course heads back into the park at Columbus Circle.
  • The view from the news conference room on the 36th floor. Pretty pretty.
  • Here comes da Mayor Bloomberg, leading the race ;-)
  • Shhhhhh....journalists in the press room analyzing every last mile split, water stop fumble and microscopic surge, all on deadline. Coffee, Powerbars and maybe a little tickle anyone?
  • The mayor gives a shout out to his peeps at Columbus Circle. It was obviously a "secure" area with only screened VIPs, etc. in the stands.
  • Neat car...I wonder if the other guy is the police or fire chief...
  • CNN was on top of things with the correct time and temps.
  • The last time you'll see Derartu Tulu and Ludmila Petrova together during the race.
  • I feel a "surge" coming on....
  • Tulu makes her move, aka "surge."
  • What's Ethiopian for "'See Ya!"
  • The Russian does not seem to understand Ethiopian and tries to stay with Tulu ....
  • Less than .3 miles to go!
  • Tulu hammered home for the win, finishing in 2:28:52, netting a $130,00 prize plus a $5,000 sub-2:29:00 time bonus. Petrova finished 8 seconds back in 2:29:00 (ouch...if one second faster she would have nailed that time bonus.
  • French woman Christelle Daunay dug deep for third (2:29:16) with three-time champion Paula Radcliffe of GBR coming in fourth despite a nagging injury and Herculean effort (2:29:27).
  • Meb Keflezighi of the USA, 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the men's marathon, took the lead in the men's race at the 24-mile mark and clained the victory in a PR of 2:09:15.
  • On the way to a $130,00 first place prize plus a $30,000 sub-2:09:30 time bonus and a $40,000 USA Championship prize. That's $200,000 plus appearance fees and hopefully free Gatorade.
  • He was the first American to win NYCM since Alberto Salazar won in 1982.
  • Meb was born in the tiny African Eritrea but moved to the San Diego area when he was 12. He is the definition of the American Dream and is American as apple pie. His win brought tears to my eyes and applause throughout the normally conservative and quiet press room.
  • 'Headed home.
